Expect pea-sized hail with thunderstorms Thursday

Los Angeles County Inland Coast including Downtown Los Angeles and San Gabriel Valley were placed under a report for strong thunderstorms by the National Weather Service on Thursday at 9:54 a.m. The alert is in effect until 10:30 a.m.

The storms could bring pea-sized hail (0.25 inches) and wind gusts of up to 55 mph.

“At 9:53 a.m., Doppler radar tracked a strong thunderstorm near Downtown Los Angeles, moving north at 15 mph,” according to the NWS Los Angeles/Oxnard CA. “Gusty winds could knock down tree limbs and blow around unsecured objects. Minor hail damage to vegetation is possible.”

Locations impacted by the alert include Alhambra, Boyle Heights, Monterey Park, Highland Park, San Gabriel, Elysian Park, Commerce, Montebello, East Los Angeles, Mt. Washington, Vernon and Huntington Park.

The NWS said, “If outdoors, consider seeking shelter inside a building. Torrential rainfall is also occurring with this storm and may lead to localized flooding. Do not drive your vehicle through flooded roadways. This storm may intensify, so be certain to monitor local radio stations and available television stations for additional information and possible warnings from the National Weather Service.”
