UGG makes some of our favorite slippers ever, but the sizing can be wonky — here's what to consider before buying or returning

Whenever I see a pair of sheepskin slippers or boots, I just assume they're UGGs. The ubiquitous brand is known and loved for its plush shoes that make your feet feel like they're being wrapped in a warm hug.

I grew up seeing people trot around in UGGs during the cold winter months in New England, but the brand actually got its start in a beachy climate. UGG was founded in 1978 by Brian Smith, an Australian living in Southern California, as an homage to sheepskin — a commonly used material in his home country. With a focus on being comfortable, relaxed, and casual, UGG embodied surf culture and became a fan-favorite brand along the coast. Since its inception, UGG has expanded into new colors and styles and has been featured several times as one of Oprah's Favorite Things.

UGGs are on the pricier side when it comes to slippers and casual footwear, but the materials and craftsmanship makes them worth it — I've owned multiple pairs of UGGs that have lasted over 10 years, which really speaks to the quality of the shoes.

If you're interested in learning more about how UGG sources its materials, it claims here that it only uses sheepskin that comes as a byproduct of other industries.

Some of the most popular UGG styles are slippers, so a few of us at Business Insider Reviews compared their bestsellers with our other favorite slippers for men and women. Unsurprisingly, each pair felt extremely comfortable (as long as you get the sizing right).

Our top 3 favorite UGG slippers

UGG Tasman slippers

The Tasman are a bestseller for men and women, and for good reason. They feature a low cut with a braided accent around the collar — an iconic style that's often immitated. Additionally, they're easy to wear, whether you prefer to limit them to inside or if you like to wear them outside.

I've had the same pair (pictured above) for almost 5 years, and while they're not as fresh as they were right out of the box, I still love them for their comfort and convenience.

For me, they're the perfect shoe to go with loungewear. Whether I'm taking out the trash, going to check my mailbox, or running to the grocery store to quickly pick up a few things, the Tasman has been my go-to for a long time. — Amir Ismael, style editor, Reviews

UGG Men's Tasman Leather Regen

As much as I love my original Tasman slippers, I wanted to replace them with a new, cleaner pair. Instead of going for the same classic Chestnut color, I went with the new Leather Regen material.

They're made with genuine leather that has been sourced from farms that practice regenerative agriculture verified by Land to Market.

Not only are they sustainably made, the look feels more elevated and premium than the standard suede option. — Amir Ismael, style editor, Reviews

UGG Coquette slippers

The first pair of UGG slippers I owned was a driver style, and they quickly found themselves collecting dust because of the too-snug fit that Amir also experienced. I'd actually been meaning to replace them with one of UGG's slide-on pairs for years but never got around to it. Once I put on the Coquette for the first time, I realized I'd made a huge mistake in not doing it sooner.

Unlike the drivers, these are cozy and plush without suffocating my feet. I also really like the rubber lug sole because it lets me walk outside to sit on the patio or check the mail without thinking twice about switching shoes. I usually order down a size with UGG, but this time I ordered up a size to leave some extra room, and it was the right choice. I've been wearing these all day, every day for the past month and I don't see that changing any time soon. — Ashley Phillips, former style and beauty editor, Reviews

UGG Ansley slippers

Growing up, I had a pair of UGG Tasman slippers. I loved them so much I wore them until the inner sole was matted, and the embroidered trim was unraveling. I was sad to see them go, but all the more excited to try the Ansley — another bestselling pair.

From first wear, the inside of the Ansley was superbly plush. Just slipping your feet inside feels luxurious, something I think you'll feel with any pair of UGGs in the beginning. They're great for lounging around in your house. However, I found these to run a bit small. I ordered them in my usual size, and they felt a bit tight, though I know they will stretch out a little because they're made of sheepskin. If you have wider feet or really don't like the feel of a more fitted slipper, I'd suggest going up a size.

I like the classic driver style of the Ansley because it covers your feet enough to go outside and pick up the paper on a chilly day. But, if you're looking for more of an indoor-outdoor slipper, I would suggest the Tasman. It has a thicker sole which makes it more equipped for time spent outdoors. I think both styles are worth the price based on how often I wear slippers, but if you don't want to spend this much and still want a great pair, I'd also suggest checking out Minnetonka. — Remi Rosmarin, former style and beauty reporter

UGG Ascot slippers

The UGG Ascot is a stylish driving shoe-style slipper that's made from genuine sheepskin with a shearling lining on the full interior of the shoe. As the first pair of UGGs I've owned, I was very pleased with the quality of the material, but they were unfortunately too small. I ordered my true size and found them to be unbearably tight. It's worth noting that any shoe with a shearling lining will loosen up marginally with wear, but I — along with many other reviewers on Zappos — found the true size to be too small. I'd recommend going up a full size, or choosing the extended size if your feet run wide.

I've since been ordering my UGGs a full size up and the fit is perfect with or without socks. — Amir Ismael, style editor, Reviews

UGG slipper FAQs

Do UGG slippers run big or small?

The fit can vary by style due to the soft materials. Sometimes, all it takes is enough consistent wear to get the tightly packed shearling lining to tamp down and make room for your foot. But for the most part, we found most UGG slippers run small and it's better to size up for a more comfortable fit, especially if you plan to wear thicker socks or have a wide foot.

How can I return my UGGs if they don't fit?

It depends on the retailer. UGG allows for free returns and exchanges if you meet its criteria. Zappos offers free returns within 60 days. If you used an alternative payment method like PayPal or Apple Pay, make sure it adheres to the same default refund period as the retailer. Otherwise, you may get a store credit instead of your money back.

How long do I have to return my UGGs?

If you ordered your slippers from UGG.com or bought them in an official UGG store, you have 30 days to complete your return for a money-back guarantee. Orders placed via UGG from October 6 through December 31, 2025 are eligible for return or exchange through January 31, 2026. Zappos is more flexible with a 60-day return window.

Can I wear UGG slippers outside?

Yes, as long as they have substantial rubber or lug soles (such as the Tazz IIs), they're suitable for outdoor wear. Other UGGS with soft, thin soles, like the Scuffettes, are better for indoor lounging.

The bottom line

UGG has earned its spot as one of the top-recommended brands for warm, cozy footwear. Whether you want slippers for indoor chores or the perfect laidback shoes for a casual winter outfit, UGG has it. They're often imitated, but hardly ever matched in quality.

Shop UGG shoes at UGG or Zappos.
