Seven Killed in Deadly Mosque Blast in Maiduguri, Nigeria
At least seven people were killed in a mosque blast in Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State in northeastern Nigeria, according to officials and eyewitnesses.
The explosion occurred on Wednesday evening, December 24, during evening prayers, when worshippers were inside the mosque, AFP reported citing local sources.
Reports indicate the bomb was planted inside the mosque, targeting congregants. While one mosque official cited eight fatalities, security sources have confirmed at least seven deaths.
Boko Haram and its splinter groups, including ISIS-affiliated factions, have been active in Maiduguri and northeastern Nigeria for years, frequently targeting civilians, religious institutions, and public places.
Maiduguri has been a hotspot for insurgent attacks, with mosques, schools, and markets repeatedly attacked over the past decade, resulting in hundreds of deaths and widespread displacement.
The exact number of injured remains unclear, but witnesses reported that many of the wounded were rushed to local hospitals for urgent medical care.
Officials have not yet identified the perpetrators, but the attack highlights ongoing security challenges in the region, despite military operations against insurgent groups.
Local authorities have called for increased vigilance around religious sites, and emergency services continue to assist victims while securing the area and investigating the incident.
