HRCC Calls For Responsible Reporting, Backs VP’s Private Trip to UK
The Malawi Human Rights Consultative Committee (HRCC) has dismissed media reports claiming that the private trip of Vice President Dr. Jane Mayemu Ansah to the United Kingdom will cost government K1.9 billion, saying the actual cost is K168 million.
HRCC board chairperson Robert Mkwezalamba said this during a press briefing in Lilongwe, stating that the widely circulated figure was misleading and had unnecessarily alarmed the public.
He said HRCC directly engaged the Office of the Vice President (OVP) to verify the details of the trip.
Mkwezalamba explained that the OVP provided comprehensive information, including the total cost and the number of people accompanying the Vice President.
According to HRCC, only five people will be travelling with Dr. Ansah, contrary to media reports suggesting a delegation of 15.
Mkwezalamba further called on relevant government agencies to investigate and take action against individuals spreading false information aimed at tarnishing the Vice President’s image.
He also confirmed that the Vice President’s private trip to the UK has not been cancelled, as speculated in some quarters.
He said the travel plans remain intact and Dr. Ansah is expected to depart on December 26 2025.
HRCC reiterated its call for responsible reporting and urged the media to verify information with relevant authorities to avoid misleading the public and undermining trust in public institutions.
