Patriots Reportedly Sign Veteran Lineman To Two-Year Extension
The New England Patriots have been one of the best teams in the NFL this season, and they have reportedly signed one of their veteran lineman, Ben Brown, to an extension.
Brown is one of the Patriots’ backup offensive linemen, and according to MassLive’s Mark Daniels, the Patriots are signing him to a two-year extension worth up to $6.6 million. Brown was an undrafted free agent who joined the Patriots last season.
Brown is a versatile lineman and can play at all three interior positions. He started Week 4 against the Carolina Panthers with Jared Wilson injured. The Patriots turned to him against the Cincinnati Bengals when Wilson went down again. Brown started the following game against the New York Giants as well.
Last season, Brown started 10 games for the Patriots at center. Even though he is a backup, he is a solid piece to have on the offensive line. He can fill in and play solid football when called upon.
It is not an expensive deal for the Patriots and a great deal for Brown, who went undrafted a few years ago. He spent time with the Bengals, Seattle Seahawks, Arizona Cardinals and Las Vegas Raiders before landing with the Patriots.
The Patriots initially signed him when David Andrews went down, but he has quietly turned into a valuable asset. As the playoffs get closer, Brown could become an important piece for New England. Offensive line injuries are not uncommon, and in this part of the year, losing a top offensive lineman could mean the end of a team’s season.
However, the team recognized the value of having a backup like Brown and rewarded him for it. He was slated to be a restricted free agent after the season, but the Patriots decided to keep him around.
