Another setback for Amorim: One Man United star rules himself out ahead of Newcastle clash
Manchester United have been dealt a crushing blow just days before their Boxing Day showdown with Newcastle United.
Captain Bruno Fernandes was taken off at half-time after suffering a hamstring setback in the 2–1 loss to Aston Villa.
According to The Sun, Fernandes could now miss the next six matches after eyewitnesses saw him limping heavily on Monday evening.
He was also asked if he would be available for the Newcastle encounter, to which he replied: “No.”
The 31-year-old has been a tireless talisman for both United and Portugal, embodying leadership and durability.
He has missed only three United games due to injury and illness since making his move to Old Trafford in January 2020.
True to his reputation as a warrior, Fernandes refused to surrender against Villa and attempted to play through the pain.
Despite being clearly hampered, he pushed on and even came agonisingly close to scoring.
His injury has come at the worst possible time with Kobbie Mainoo also suffering from a calf problem.
Further compounding the crisis, the AFCON departures of Bryan Mbeumo and Amad Diallo have stripped manager Ruben Amorim of crucial attacking depth during the festive schedule.
Fernandes has bagged 12 goal contributions in the Premier League this campaign.
With options thinning, Casemiro and Manuel Ugarte are expected to anchor the midfield pivot in the coming fixtures.
Amorim may now be forced to gamble on academy youngsters or to push INEOS into decisive action when the winter transfer window opens.
Ruben Neves is one of the midfielders who is heavily tipped to be available for a transfer next month.
