Kevin Costner Sued as Part of $440,000 Lawsuit Tied To Embattled Film Project
Easily one of the most successful actors of his generation, Kevin Costner undeniably deserves to be considered an acting legend. The star of movies like The Untouchables, Bull Durham, Field of Dreams, Silverado, Dances with Wolves, JFK, and Hidden Figures, Costner will go down in Hollywood history. On top of his many classic movies, Costner cemented his legacy further by starring in the hit TV series Yellowstone.
Despite all of the success that Costner has enjoyed, every movie star hits stumbling blocks at various points in their career. Unfortunately for Costner, an ongoing project that the beloved actor clearly deeply cares about has had to face several setbacks over the last several months. Now, Costner has been named in a potentially costly lawsuit tied to the film franchise.
Kevin Costner Has Been Named in a $440,000 'Horizon: An American Saga' Lawsuit
In December 2025, The Hollywood Reporter announced that a $440,000 lawsuit had been filed against Kevin Costner and his production banner, Territory Pictures. The lawsuit, which was filed by the company Western Costume, alleges that they provided costumes for Costner's movie, Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 2, and were never paid.
According to the lawsuit filed by Western Costume, they are seeking $440,000 for several reasons. In addition to seeking the money they claim to have not been paid, the company also alleges that one of those factors is that some of their costumes were damaged during the film's production, and they are seeking compensation for that.
As of the time of this writing, nobody from Costner's camp has responded to the claims made in the lawsuit. Men's Journal has reached out to Kevin Costner's representatives seeking comment on the $440,000 lawsuit.

While Kevin Costner is most famous for starring in several iconic movies, he really should get more credit from the public for being an artist, storyteller, and filmmaker. After all, Costner has proven time and time again that he has vision for how to craft films and the ambition to bring many projects to fruition. Most recently, Costner envisioned a four-film franchise called Horizon: An American Saga.
Unfortunately for Costner, the Horizon: An American Saga film series had already inspired two other lawsuits before the most recently filed one. In May 2025, USA Today reported that a stunt double who worked on the franchise named Devyn LaBella sued Costner, alleging sexual discrimination and harassment. The lawsuit, which is still pending, claims that LaBella "was the victim of a violent, unscripted, unscheduled rape scene directed" by Costner.
USA Today's article on that lawsuit quoted a statement from Costner's lawyer, Marty Singer, claiming that the lawsuit had "absolutely no merit" and was "contradicted by [LaBella's] own actions — and the facts." The statement continued, "Ms. LaBella is a serial accuser of people in the entertainment industry and has worked with the same lawyer on past claims. But those shakedown tactics won't work in this case... [Costner] always wants to make sure that everyone is comfortable working on his films and takes safety on set very seriously."
A separate The Hollywood Reporter article from August 2025 detailed another lawsuit focused on the Horizon: An American Saga. That report revealed that Costner and his production company had settled a lawsuit that claimed that a different costume company, United Costume Corporation, hadn't been paid for their work on the franchise. That lawsuit had been filed in May 2025 and was originally seeking roughly $350,000.
As part of The Hollywood Reporter's aforementioned December 2025 article about the most recent lawsuit, the outlet described non-legal setbacks Costner's film series has been facing. According to the outlet, Horizon: An American Saga– Chapter 1 only made $38.7 million at the box office after being produced for $100 million. THR reports that caused two problems for the franchise. First off, the first film's financial failure has caused the release of its sequel to be pushed back indefinitely, even though it has been filmed and was originally pegged for a 2024 premiere. Secondly, the outlet reported that Costner is struggling to garner investments to help fund production of the third and fourth planned films. Furthermore, the report states that Costner met with top Saudi Arabian officials to pitch them on the opportunity, but he wasn't believed to have been able to reach a deal.
