Pontypridd v Beddau – Matchday Preview
Next up the festive derby clashes keep on coming for Pontypridd RFC when, on Boxing Day Friday 26th December, Beddau RFC make the short trip to Sardis Road. The Admiral Premiership match between the sides kicks off at 2:30pm.
The two clubs have met on three previous occasions during their existence, the first time coming in the Welsh Cup on 16th November 1974 at Sardis Road. Ponty won that encounter 21 points to 9 in what was the club’s first season playing at their new home.
The other two games between the two sides were both friendlies, and both took place at Beddau’s ground Mount Pleasant Park. The first was a ‘mid-season’ friendly on 4th October 2007, which Pontypridd won 26-0, the second was a pre-season friendly on 16th August 2008 which the visitors again triumphed in by a 58-11 scoreline.
Pontypridd returned to winning ways on Saturday against Ystrad Rhondda. The Valley Commandos earned a bonus-point win which added 5 points to their Premiership tally, but the 36-20 winning scoreline only told half the story. The men from Gelligaled Park put in an excellent team performance which put the result in the balance until deep into the final quarter before the Valley Commandos exerted their control to seal the spoils.
Beddau RFC are playing at Premiership level for the first time in their history after winning last season’s Championship East, and what a campaign they are having – they have won 10 out of their 11 league matches to date, their only loss coming away at Merthyr 22-15 last month. Coached by ex-Pontypridd coach Lee Davies, the men from Mount Pleasant Park currently sit in 2nd place in the standings, two points ahead of Ponty who occupy third. Such is the exciting nature of this season’s title race there’s only three points separating the top three clubs, and as legendary Welsh Rugby Broadcaster Phil Steele would say: “Love Club Rugby.”
As has already been mentioned, as a club we are expecting another big crowd on Boxing Day so we would urge the supporters of both clubs to arrive at the ground promptly to avoid any congestion and queues at the ticket booth.
