“I’m feeling like: Why not? We have this thing that’s so special to us, so we’re just really happy to share it with the fans,” she said at project’s premiere at the Grammy Museum, via Variety. “It’s kind of a rebellious project. And, by Harlequin standards, Christmas is the perfect time to release something rebellious.”
“It was interesting — when we first saw the footage, we said, ‘This is not the right time to put this out.’ And we collectively agreed that we would allow the lore of the Belasco performance to bloom with the fans, until it felt like time… And so this is like a Christmas present,” she added of the delayed release.
Gaga is joined by a six-piece band in the special, where they will perform the album in its entirety, including “That’s Entertainment,” “That’s Life” and “When the Saints Go Marching In,” along with the original songs that also appeared on the album.
Variety teases that the performance takes place in a setting inspired by accompanying photo shoot from the album, in a “shockingly disheveled-looking apartment setting, where the window blinds probably haven’t been straight in a few decades, and there’s unmade bedding on a mattress on the floor. The set dressing is messy and shadowy, and yet, performance-wise, Gaga has never seemed more exhilarated.”
“What’s so interesting is, I was meant to do that performance as three songs, as just kind of a celebration after the premiere of Joker. And a couple days before, Michael [Polansky] and I were like, ‘What? We’re just gonna do the whole album.’ I had just filmed the ‘Disease’ video, for my first single from Mayhem, a couple weeks before, and I just loved working with Marcell [Rev, the director of photography]. He’s this incredible artist, and he gets like right in there. So after doing ‘Disease,’ we thought, ‘What if we worked with him on this?’” she explained.
