Prince George Carries on Special Tradition Started by Grandma Princess Diana
Princess Diana would be so proud of her grandson Prince George if she could see him now. The 12-year-old son of Prince William and Kate Middleton just carried on a tradition started by the late Princess of Wales, which included a heartwarming nod to the People’s Princess.
“Proud to join volunteers and staff at The Passage in preparing Christmas lunch – this year with another pair of helping hands!” Prince William wrote on Instagram recently. He brought his pre-teen to The Passage, the U.K.’s largest resource center for homeless and insecurely housed people on Dec. 16. In the video, Prince George dressed casually in a red sweater with a white apron with his name printed on the front. He worked side-by-side with his dad, preparing food for people in need.
This is a beautiful moment, as Diana took William and her youngest son Prince Harry to the same charity when they were kids. Prince William spoke about it in last year’s documentary, Prince William: We Can End Homelessness, “I’d never been to anything like that before. And I was a bit anxious as to what to expect,” he said, per PEOPLE.
“My mother went about her usual part of making everyone feel relaxed and having a laugh and joking with everyone,” he continued. “I remember at the time kind of thinking, ‘Well, if everyone’s not got a home, they’re all going to be really sad.’ But it was incredible how happy an environment it was.”
“The visits I made as a child to this place left a deep and lasting impression upon me — about how important it is to ensure that everyone in our society, especially the poorest, are treated with respect, dignity and kindness, and are given the opportunities to fulfill their potential in life,” William added in the documentary.
Now, he’s teaching his oldest son the same important lessons. He shared another post on Instagram, this time of photos from their day at The Passage. “Introducing Prince George to The Passage — and Claudette!” he wrote. “A huge thank you to everyone for your incredible work throughout the year and for continuing to inspire a shared commitment to preventing and ending homelessness in the UK.”
In a third post, Prince William shared a throwback photo of him and his mom at The Passage. William looks to be about George’s age now, except he’s wearing a suit and tie instead of a more casual sweater like George is now. “Christmas at The Passage, 32 years apart ????” he wrote. “December 1993: Diana, Princess of Wales, Prince William and Passage Chefs. December 2025: Prince William, Prince George and Head Chef Claudette.”
The last slide in this post features a signed visitors book, with Diana and William’s signatures on Dec. 14, 1993, and George’s signature just underneath on Dec. 16, 2025. How can you not get emotional seeing that beautiful full-circle moment for William?
“So lovely seeing George walking in the footsteps of his lovely father and grandmother,” one person commented. Someone else wrote, “The hand writing got me ????.. Princess Diana was wonderful and would have been the most amazing grandmother ❤️”
“Princess Diana made a huge impact during her short life. Now, William and George keep the memory of her work alive. A beautiful tribute indeed ❤️” another said.
“What a tender way to carry your mother’s legacy and love forward after loss,” someone else wrote. “We wonder what grief looks like 23 years later? Like this. Remembering and honoring the one you miss as you thread together old and new memories with the ones you have.”
In 2023, Prince William revealed that he often talks to Prince George and his kids Princess Charlotte, 10, and Prince Louis, 7, about their privilege. “On the school run, we talk about what we see,” William told The Sunday Times. “When we were in London, driving backwards and forwards, we regularly used to see people sitting outside supermarkets, and we’d talk about it. I’d say to the children, ‘Why are they there? What’s going on?’”
He makes sure to not shield his children from these issues. “I think it’s in all our interests, it’s the right thing to do, to expose the children, at the right stage, in the right dialogue, so they have an understanding,” William told the outlet. “They [will] grow up knowing that actually, do you know what, some of us are very fortunate, some of us need a little bit of a helping hand, some of us need to do a bit more where we can to help others improve their lives.”
