Report: Willson Contreras Traded To Boston
Late Sunday evening, it was reported by Jeff Passan of ESPN that the Boston Red Sox are acquiring first baseman Willson Contreras from the St. Louis Cardinals.
The full return for St. Louis is RHP Hunter Dobbins, RHP Yhoiker Fajardo, and RHP Blake Aita according to Ken Rosenthal of the Athletic.
Contreras, 33 years old, is under team control through 2028 at a favorable price tag (includes an option). He made the transition to first base last season where he played at a Gold-Glove level. He slashed .256/.344/.447 (.791 OPS) with 20 home runs and 80 RBIs.
Contreras was widely reported as a target of the New York Mets. SNY went as far as confirming he’d be willing to accept a trade to New York as Contreras had a no-trade clause in his contract. However, a later report walked back the Mets’ interest, specifically after the Jorge Polanco signing, thus a deal was never formalized.
Contreras will now anchor a dangerous Boston Red Sox lineup. Boston continues their trend of being very active this offseason.
