Sports briefs: Freshman scores twice to lead San Rafael to win
Freshman Raul De Leon scored twice on headers after corner kicks taken by Cal Stewart to lead the San Rafael High boys soccer team to a 4-1 win against Pinole Valley on Saturday.
Logan Dean and Elvin Calderon also had goals for the Bulldogs (4-2-3). Stewart finished the game with three assists. Coach Jose De La Rosa also noted a strong performance from forward Brandon Perez.
San Rafael hosts Sonoma Valley at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the last game before the winter break.
- Redwood (2-1-2) lost 4-0 to Ukiah on Saturday night.
- San Marin remained winless on the season following a 7-0 loss to Petaluma on Saturday night.
Boys basketball
Evan Brewster scored 34 points and was one of two Trojans named to the all-tournament team after Terra Linda fell 57-54 in the title game to host Albany in the Frank Wells Tournament on Saturday.
Cameron Gregoire was also named to the all-tournament team for the Trojans (6-3). Albany (8-0) built 10-point leads twice in the second half but the Trojans battled back and had a chance to tie the game with a 3-pointer at the buzzer.
Girls basketball
Archie Williams (3-3) snapped a three-game losing streak with a 38-33 victory against Vintage on Saturday.
- Marin Catholic (2-7) fell behind early in an 84-34 loss to Pinewood on Saturday.
- San Marin (6-4) dropped its third consecutive game in a 67-32 loss to St. Francis on Saturday.
Prep wrestling
Redwood High’s 139-pounder Dylan Morton claimed second place at the Bill Martell Invitational on Saturday. The Giants’ Rex Kohner (107) and Hayden Schepps (158) placed fourth as Redwood finished 15th among 38 teams.
- San Rafael’s Rio Johnson (150) went 2-2 at the Pirate Invitational at Pittsburg High on Saturday.
- Terra Linda’s Laszlo Chaffee (175) went 3-2 at the Drew Esquivel Memorial Duals on Saturday, with wins over Casa Grande’s Noah Holley and Petaluma’s Hunter Arndt.
