Rolfo inspires comeback as Janssen hits milestone in Man United Women win over Spurs
Manchester United Women came from a goal down to claim a 2-1 victory over Tottenham Hotspur in the Women’s League Cup quarter-final at Progress With Unity Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
The game marked Dominique Janssen’s 50th appearance for United, but it was Fridolina Rolfo who grabbed the headlines, scoring the late winner for Marc Skinner’s side.
Tottenham began the game on the front foot, getting their first sight of goal inside two minutes, when Matilda Vinberg floated the ball into the area, and Bethany England headed it over the bar.
United had Phallon Tullis-Joyce to thank as the goalkeeper made a one-on-one save to deny Olivia Holdt from giving Spurs the lead on 13 minutes.
Three minutes later, the United goalkeeper was beaten, as Drew Spence curled a shot to the top-left corner, giving Spurs a 1-0 lead.
The Red Devils finally looked threatening after the half-hour mark, with Anna Sandberg’s close-range effort deflected wide. Spurs also managed to make a goalline clearance from the resultant corner.
Shortly after the start of the second half, Jessica Park, who netted against Juventus, drew United level, guiding Rolfo’s low cross home.
The goal allowed the game’s momentum to swing in United’s favour.
Dominique Janssen saw a half-volley fly over the bar after Rolfo headed Anna Sandberg’s free-kick back into the area, before Rolfo’s effort was pushed away by goalkeeper Lize Kop.
Kop was at it again, denying Rolfo from converting Sandberg’s free-kick, keeping the score level.
However, four minutes from time, the Sweden international eventually beat the Spurs goalkeeper, smashing a left-footed shot to the top left corner, giving United a 2-1 victory.
The Red Devils will now face Arsenal, who beat Crystal Palace 2-0 in one of the other quarter-final clashes.
