LUCS 35 – 7 SYSTON
LUCS BOUNCE BACK FROM LAST WEEK’S DEFEAT
Luctonians RFC vs Syston RFC
Saturday 20th December 2025 – Mortimer Park
Match Report by Geoff Vickress
Lucs bounced back from last week’s defeat with a well-structured victory against a very game Syston, who defended superbly at times. In front of a large Christmas crowd the home side sent their supporters home with plenty of festive optimism for the new year’s fixtures.
Early enterprise by Syston was nullified when Star Man, Bryn Goodall intercepted a pass on halfway and ran in under the posts unopposed, to dot down after 8 minutes; Owen Randell converting for a 7-0 lead for the home side. And Goodall was in the money ten minutes later when his clever chip over the Syston defence saw him collect his own kick, to run in under the posts; Randell again converting for a 14-0 lead.
Syston huffed and puffed, but Lucs’ organised defence kept them at bay despite a couple of missed tackles, and it was no surprise when the home side’s ever alert Owen Randell followed up excellent work by centre James Mear, to sprint over just before half time, converting his own try to give the home side a 21 to nil points advantage before the teams went to the sheds for mulled wine.
Half Time Score
Luctonians RFC 21 – 0 Syston RFC
Syston came out for the second half, once again all guns blazing, with their impressive No.8 Ed James, who impressed throughout, giving Lucs plenty to think about. But the home side stuck to their game plan and scored a well worked team try when wing Rob Aikman finished a flowing move just after the hour in the corner; Goodall kicking an excellent conversion for the bonus points.
Lucs No.8 Jack Goodwin was driven over in the last 10 minutes, Randell again converting to stretch the home sides advantage out to 35-0, before Syston got a deserved consolation score late, when James Rudkin darted through to save them from a nil defeat; Fin Nockles converting to finalise the score at 35-7.
