Tottenham legend hits out at journalist for calling key player a ‘complete liability’
The Mirror’s Darren Lewis has given a scathing assessment of a senior Tottenham Hotspur star following the club’s 2-1 loss to Liverpool on Saturday.
Thomas Frank has said that he is proud of the performance that his players delivered against Liverpool, and one can certainly understand why the Spurs boss made those comments.
Despite being a man down for the majority of the game, Tottenham Hotspur continued to fight and put the Reds under some serious pressure late on.
The Merseyside club won courtesy of a controversial Hugo Etikite goal, with the Frenchman appearing to have pushed Romero in the back before heading the ball into the back of the net.
Darren Lewis claims Cristian Romero is a liability for Tottenham
Romero was one of two Spurs players to get a red card, with the Argentine getting his first booking for complaining about Ekitike’s goal and his second courtesy of kicking out at Ibrahima Konate after the Liverpool defender’s foul in stoppage time.
The Mirror’s Darren Lewis took to social media to conclude that the 27-year-old has always been a liability for the Lilywhites.
He wrote: ‘Cristian Romero. Decent player but is and always has been a complete liability in a Spurs shirt.’
When Graham Roberts questioned Lewis’ assertion, the journalist doubled down on his claim, insisting that a player who is as experienced as the Spurs captain should have a cooler head.
The Spurs legend wrote: ‘Didn’t look like a liability, Darren, when he was MOTM v Man United in the final to bring that wonderful trophy back to Tottenham.’
Lewis responded: ‘A performance he has in his locker when his head is right. And a game that papered over a lot of cracks. Someone with his experience should not be finding himself in as many needlessly incendiary situations as he does.’
Should Romero’s disciplinary record be a worry for Spurs?
There is no doubt that Romero’s temperament has improved over the past couple of years. In fact, this was his first red card in over two years.
However, there are signs this season that the centre-back’s old habits are creeping back into his game.
Romero has received more yellow cards than any other player in the Premier League this term, and as captain, one would expect him to behave better and set an example.
