U.S. and Jordan Launch Airstrikes on ISIS Targets in Syria
On Friday night, the United States and Jordan launched strikes against over 70 ISIS targets in Syria, following attacks on U.S. and Syrian forces in Palmyra.
The United States launched a major operation against ISIS in Syria on Friday night, targeting more than 70 militant positions following attacks on U.S. and Syrian forces in Palmyra.
CENTCOM, the U.S. Central Command, said the strikes, dubbed “Operation Falcon Eye,” involved fighter jets, attack helicopters, and artillery, aiming to degrade ISIS infrastructure and weapons sites across central Syria.
Jordanian F-16 fighter jets also participated in the operation, which used over 100 precision-guided munitions, CENTCOM added, highlighting the close coordination with regional allies.
The Associated Press reported that U.S. aircraft included F-15s, A-10 ground attack planes, and Apache helicopters, while Jordanian forces employed HIMARS rocket artillery during the strikes.
According to CENTCOM, these attacks follow a broader campaign in which U.S. and allied forces conducted more than 80 missions over the past six months, killing or capturing 23 ISIS militants in Syria and Iraq.
Admiral Brad Cooper, CENTCOM commander, told reporters the operation is crucial to preventing ISIS from inspiring terrorist plots or attacks against the United States and its regional partners.
President Donald Trump, referring to the operation, said the U.S. is delivering “severe retribution” against ISIS and warned that the country would continue striking hardened militant positions across Syria.
Analysts cited by Reuters said the operation underscores the ongoing U.S. commitment to counterterrorism in the region, while maintaining pressure on ISIS networks despite the group’s territorial losses.
The strikes coincide with heightened tensions in Syria, as both U.S. and allied forces remain on high alert following recent ISIS attacks against military personnel in Palmyra.
