Abdulsalam Omari, head of the Taliban’s Natural Disaster Preparedness Office, confirmed the deaths on Saturday, December 20, and stressed that non-standard housing often increases the risk of fatalities during severe weather.

Local residents report that the winter season is particularly harsh this year. In nearby Herat province, three Afghan citizens reportedly died attempting to cross the border into Iran amid extreme cold. Families in the region, however, claim the death toll is higher, with several missing.

UN data highlights that Afghanistan faces a crippling economic crisis, with unemployment reaching 75 percent and over 90 percent of the population living below the poverty line. This economic hardship exacerbates the dangers of harsh winters, leaving many families vulnerable.

International media reports have frequently highlighted similar incidents in Afghanistan, where flooding, snowstorms, and extreme cold regularly endanger residents living in substandard homes.
