For anyone panicking about Lucas’ future on the show, you can relax.
Director and executive producer Andrew Fleming spoke with Us Weekly and clarified what’s going on with Lucas and his character. Notably, the French actor was working on a movie at the time, and the series had to adjust around his limited availability.
“He’s important. He’s part of the DNA of the show,” Andrew told the outlet. “When he and Emily are in a scene together, something undefinable happens. They have this chemistry. They do. There’s just something about the two of them that’s very watchable.”
By the end of season 5, Emily has broken up with Marcello and moved back to Paris. After Gabriel learns of the split, he writes her a letter expressing his feelings and inviting her to visit him in Greece. It’s an enticing cliffhanger for fans who have been waiting years to see the pair fully explore their connection.
The executive went on to add, “Looking ahead, they’re part of each other’s journey. Who is to say who Emily is going to end up with, but Emily and Gabriel are going to interact with each other. Stuff is going to happen [but] I really can’t say anything about what’s going to happen next season.”
That said, Netflix has not officially renewed the series for a sixth season, though Andrew sounds confident it will happen.
