Tottenham hatch a January transfer plan for Brennan Johnson, but it has failed in the past

Tottenham Hotspur have made a decision on whether to let Brennan Johnson leave the club in January, but their strategy is one which has failed in the past.

Tottenham Hotspur need to make space in their squad for new arrivals and this means selling players, including those who have been important to the club.

Brennan Johnson is someone who is very much at risk of being moved on by Spurs, with the Welshman failing to receive regular starts.

It has been reported that Tottenham already have a price in mind for Johnson, with three teams lining up to get their hands on the winger.

Tottenham do not want to sell Brennan Johnson in January

Despite the rumours surrounding Johnson, Spurs are not looking to sell him on a permanent basis, but there is a willingness to let him temporarily depart the club.

According to Team Talk, Tottenham want to loan out Johnson in January in hopes that time away from North London will kickstart his career. Should this happen, Spurs would be more likely to collect a higher transfer fee in the summer.

Johnson is prepared to leave Tottenham in search of game time and he is considering his options. There is an acceptance within the club that Thomas Frank is not a big fan of the 24-year-old.

Aston Villa and Bouremouth have emerged as the latest teams interested in agreeing a deal for Johnson and several clubs have enquired about the player’s situation.

Spurs must cut their losses on Johnson

Tottenham have tried the strategy of loaning out players before in order to boost their transfer fee, but it usually just prolongs the inevitable rather than delivering a profit.

Johnson gave Spurs one of the greatest moments in their recent history and therefore it was worth paying Nottingham Forest a £47.5m transfer fee, even if he was never worth that much.

Therefore, Tottenham need to accept that they overspent on the forward, but because he gave the fans a memory to forever cherish, it does not actually matter. They should get what they can for him at the earliest possible opportunity and look to press on with a new signing.
