This autumn, as part of a new partnership with Sinclair Land Rover, Luctonians launched the first-ever Sinclair Defender Schools Rugby Series, offering free training and rugby skills sessions to five local high schools.
The sessions, aimed at Year 7 boys and girls, provided an introduction to rugby through fun, inclusive coaching, and culminated in three competitive tournament afternoons at Mortimer Park. Across the series, more than 60 boys took part, with many experiencing their first taste of competitive rugby.
Round 1 –
A brilliant start to the Girls Competition saw Weobley lead the way with four wins from four, conceding just four tries all day, thanks to outstanding defence.
Wigmore were close behind, losing narrowly 1–0 to Weobley but winning their other three matches.
QE Bromyard flew out of the blocks with two early wins to finish 3rd, while Lady Hawkins secured 4th after a strong 4–2 win over Earl Mortimer College, who showed great spirit and commitment throughout the round.
Round 2
With another afternoon of excellent rugby on display. Defensive improvements were clear across all teams, with far fewer tries conceded and big strides made in tackling and organisation.
Earl Mortimer College turned the form book on its head to take the Round 2 win, leaving the overall standings incredibly tight heading into the finale.
Round 3 – Weobley come out on top
The final round, played in early December, brought the series to an exciting conclusion, with over 50 girls taking part in another fantastic evening of rugby. Weobley High School were crowned Series Champions, picking up their second round win of the competition. Their crucial 3–1 victory over Earl Mortimer College in the final game proved decisive, in what was effectively a winner-takes-all match. EMC pushed them all the way after strong earlier wins over Wigmore and Lady Hawkins.
Wigmore finished 3rd on the day and overall, with Lady Hawkins securing 4th place.
Final Series Standings:
1st Place – Weobley – 15 points
2nd Place – Earl Mortimer College – 11 points
3rd Place – Wigmore – 11 Points
4th Place – Lady Hawkins – 5 Points
5th Place – QE Bromyard
A huge thank you to all the teachers, volunteer referees, and most importantly the players, many of whom experienced rugby for the first time. It’s been brilliant to see so many now coming down to Lucs to join the U12s girls section
