NC State’s Will Wade rips ‘casual personalities’ on his team
BY ALEJANDRO LOPEZ
It’s not often a team catches heat from its own head coach after a blowout victory but that is exactly what happened to NC State after a 30-point victory over Texas Southern.
“It’s tough, we got a lot of nice guys, got a great team GPA, we got all that stuff. Over 3.0, we got all that stuff it’s wonderful, if we’re running a daycare,” head coach Will Wade said after NC State’s 108-72 victory over Texas Southern. “We run a competitive basketball program. We’ve got a lot of casual personalities on this team.”
While the Wolfpack may have walked away with the victory, Wade questioned the team’s leadership and toughness after surrendering more than 70 points to a team that is 1-8 on the season.
The Wolfpack are 8-4 in Wade’s first season as the team’s head coach. One of his decisions as the program’s new leader was to retain guard Paul McNeil who payed just 8 minutes per game last season.
On Wednesday night, McNeil dropped a career high 47 points as a starting guard while setting an ACC record with 11 3-pointers made.
Still, if you ask Wade, this team probably still has a long ways to go if they want to compete at the level he envisioned when he took the job.
