Stacey Abrams–Affiliated Climate Group Collected $5M in Public Funds Before Trump Administration Shut Down the Grant

Another day, another Biden-era green slush fund exposed.

Newly reviewed tax documents reveal that Rewiring America, a climate activist organization closely tied to Democrat power broker Stacey Abrams, quietly banked more than $5 million in federal taxpayer money before the Trump administration moved to shut down the controversial grant earlier this year.

The new findings, reported by the Washington Free Beacon, directly undercut Abrams’s public claims that she played only a minimal role—or none at all—in securing the massive EPA payout.

Investigative reporter Paul Sperry of Real Clear Investigations wrote on April this year:

President Trump singled out Georgia activist Stacey Abrams as someone who helped orchestrate a controversial $2 billion deal between left-wing nonprofit groups and the Environmental Protection Agency during the Biden administration.

“We know she’s involved,” Trump told Congress.

He was right. But after his statement, the Washington media went into overdrive to pooh-pooh her role in a frenzy of “fact-checking.”

The Washington Post, for one, claimed Abrams’ role in the Biden massive green-energy initiative has been “vastly overblown” by President Trump and the “right-wing media.”

But in fact, Abrams and her partner Ari Matusiak, CEO of Rewiring America, were the driving force behind winning the massive grant, something they revealed in their own words during a podcast last year. Matusiak said she helped “put together” the Power Forward Communities coalition to apply for and win the $2 billion grant.

By his own account, Matusiak also helped draft the 2022 Biden legislation that created the $27 billion green fund that Rewiring and its coalition were able to tap into two years later.

PolitiFact also claimed Abrams is no longer working for Rewiring, but Abrams’ own website said she is still working with the nonprofit.

“Stacey serves as a senior adviser and consultant for Rewiring America,” her site states.

A timeline drawn from public records, however, sheds light on how their histories dovetailed to secure the multi-billion dollar grant from the Biden administration. Read below:

In April 2024, the Biden Environmental Protection Agency awarded a staggering $2 billion grant to a little-known nonprofit called Power Forward Communities, which served as the lead entity for a coalition spearheaded by Rewiring America.

Abrams served as senior counsel and senior adviser to Rewiring America from March 2023 through early 2025, precisely when the grant was secured and funds were distributed.

Despite later insisting she had “no affiliation” with Power Forward Communities and played a negligible role in the grant process, tax filings show a very different story:

• Of the $9.5 million Power Forward Communities received from the EPA by the end of 2024, more than half—over $5 million—went directly to Rewiring America

• Power Forward Communities reported no other source of revenue, indicating it functioned as a pass-through entity designed to funnel taxpayer dollars to Abrams-linked organizations

• At the time, Rewiring America officials openly admitted Abrams “played a pivotal role” in securing the grant

Yet when scrutiny mounted, and the Trump EPA stepped in, the story suddenly changed.

After EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin terminated the grant following investigative reporting, Power Forward Communities attempted to distance itself from Abrams entirely.

Lee Zeldin wrote on X:

"I proudly cancelled this grant in March, citing the rampant self-dealing, conflicts of interest, unqualified recipients, and reduced government oversight. The Trump EPA refuses to light taxpayer dollars on fire, which is exactly what the Biden Administration enthusiastically did. The days of these absurd green slush funds are OVER!"

Zeldin said the newly filed tax forms show that the Biden administration's decision to award billions of dollars to Power Forward Communities was indeed political.

"This revelation is the latest egregious example (on top of so many we've found) of how, in rushing $20 billion out the door before President Trump took office, the Biden EPA doled out hard-earned tax dollars to unqualified recipients riddled with self-dealing and conflicts of interest, while intentionally reducing agency oversight," Zeldin told the Free Beacon in a statement.

The dollar amount given to Rewiring America dwarfs how much Power Forward Communities disbursed to other coalition members: Local Initiatives Support received $244,756, United Way Worldwide received $145,013, Enterprise Green Accelerator received $73,866, and Habitat for Humanity International received $0.

In addition to the payments to coalition members, Power Forward Communities reported spending $2.2 million of the EPA grant to cover unspecified expenses, $726,818 of the grant on salaries for executives and other staff, and $310,500 of the grant on recruiting, among other expenses. Its salaries include $206,250 for Mayopoulos, who worked 20 hours per week, according to the filings.

Mayopoulos received an additional $181,121 from Rewiring America for consulting services, another sign of the close relationship between the two entities.

Lee Zeldin said in a statement to the news outlet:

"Every single penny given to this Stacey Abrams-connected NGO last year was either sent to another pass-through entity or used to pay the salaries of its well-connected top officials.

"This is the same organization that earned only $100 in 2023 but was handed $2 BILLION in 2024 by the Biden EPA.

"I proudly terminated this grant and all others in the Greenhouse Gas Reduction Fund in March, and since then Congress repealed the program entirely. At the Trump EPA, we will always be exceptional stewards of tax dollars, with a zero tolerance policy towards any waste or abuse."
