Rio Ferdinand blown away by £47m star, he was made for vintage Man United team
Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand has singled out Bruno Fernandes for glowing praise.
Ferdinand is widely considered one of the best defenders of his era, playing a pivotal role in helping United win several trophies under Sir Alex Ferguson.
Speaking on United’s Inside Carrington podcast, the 47-year-old said that Fernandes possesses three key traits that are important to being a United player.
He said: “A player I think could have played in our team would be Bruno, because I said when I was talking to him earlier, Giggs even made a really kind of good statement, when I interviewed him he said there’s three things that you need to be a Man United player.
“You need to be able to run, take risks, and have imagination, and that’s Bruno. If you’re describing Bruno, that would be him.”
Rio Ferdinand is absolutely right
United have misfired with several marquee signings in recent years, but they unquestionably struck gold when Fernandes arrived at Old Trafford.
The Portuguese maestro joined from Sporting Lisbon in January 2020 for £47 million.
In the midst of a fractured and often inconsistent United side, Fernandes has emerged as the undisputed leader, winning the Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year award four times in just six seasons.
Since making his Premier League debut, no player has created more chances in the competition.
Ferdinand is spot on with his comments that a United player must play with a courageous and entertaining style.
Boring football has never belonged at the Theatre of Dreams.
That philosophy is precisely why even trophy-winning managers like Louis van Gaal and Jose Mourinho ultimately paid the price for straying from it.
Earlier this summer, Fernandes demonstrated rare loyalty by turning down a lucrative move to Saudi Arabia, a decision that could have secured generational wealth.
At 31, he remains the heartbeat of this United team and still has at least a couple of elite seasons left to define his legacy at Old Trafford.
