Sean Crighton is delighted and proud of his team’s performance in the KDM Evolution Cup tie against Clyde FC. They defeated the visitors 2-1, with goals from Seb Drozd and Josh Fowler securing progression to the next round against Forfar Athletic.
“I’m delighted with them, it was a tough game.
“I thought we played some decent stuff – although I actually had a stern chat with them at half-time, I just felt as if we were too loose with the ball and it’s stuff that all the boys are good at.
“I want them to be comfortable with the ball and we definitely could perform better but I’m delighted that it’s another home win.”
The boss was full of praise for his younger players who got some experience, including keeper Milosz Sliwinski who made his second start between the sticks for The Spiders.
Substitute Cole Goldie also made his debut aged 16 with fellow Academy youngster Sam MacLachlan also on the bench.
Crighton highlighted how important it is to give youngsters a chance.
“I don’t know what our average age would’ve been tonight, but it would’ve been pretty low,” he said.
“When I came in, I spoke about giving the youngsters a chance and they all took their chance tonight. Milosz stood up, it was a big save. The likes of Cole Goldie, it’s amazing for him and his family and I said to him in there, that’s only the start.
“I also think credit needs to go to Rocco Friel for an unbelievable block towards the end, that kid’s came in from QPR and anytime he’s called upon, he’s done his job.”
The game wasn’t all debuts, as Louis Longridge made his 200th appearance for the club when he came on just after the hour mark. Here’s what the gaffer had to say about that achievement.
“That’s an unbelievable achievement for Louis, he wasn’t actually meant to be in the squad, but we had a couple of illnesses. I just said to him listen, I’m going to need you to be on the bench and manage the game. Louis is that enthusiastic, he said no problem.
“I’m delighted for him, he was a character I wanted when I came as the manager and he’s been first class for me.”
Overall, The Spiders boss was happy with the win and is hoping for the squad to kick on for the rest of the season, starting with Airdrieonians on Saturday at The Albert Bartlett Stadium.
Sean and the team will be back in cup action on the 6/7th of January, they have been drawn against Forfar Athletic at home.
