Juventus W 0-1 Man United W: Jess Park the difference as Skinner’s side impress in Champions League
Manchester United Women fought hard to secure a 1-0 victory at Juventus in the UEFA Women’s Champions League on Wednesday evening.
United created the game’s first chance from a corner-kick, which caused chaos in the Juventus penalty area, but goalkeeper Pauline Peyraud-Magnin eventually dealt with it.
A Maya Le Tissier mistake nearly gave Juventus an early lead as the defender was dispossessed by Amalie Vangsgaard, but the forward’s effort was saved by Phallon Tullis-Joyce.
After an eventful start, both sides found it difficult to create chances until United broke the deadlock in the 19th minute.
After a brilliant team move through the middle, the ball fell to Jess Park, who curled a shot into the top corner.
Juventus had Peyraud-Magnin to thank as the goalkeeper did brilliantly to deny Melvine Malard from doubling United’s lead.
Dominique Janssen then saw her free-kick saved by the goalkeeper as United continued their search for the second goal.
Just before the stroke of halftime, Tullis-Joyce almost made a costly mistake that could have levelled the scores, but luckily, the danger was averted.
United started the second half like they ended the first, creating the first chance, as Park’s 20-yard effort was saved by the goalkeeper.
Juventus’ first real chance after the interval came when United lost possession in the defence, and Cristiana Girelli was played through on goal. Luckily, Le Tissier made a last-ditch tackle to prevent the forward from scoring.
United defended well for the rest of the game, ensuring that they they end the league phase campaign with a victory.
Marc Skinner’s side collected 12 points from six games to finish sixth in the standings, booking a play-off spot in the process.
Man United are back in action on Sunday afternoon, when they host Tottenham Hotspur in the Women’s League Cup quarter-final.
