American Climber, 33, Dies in Fall From Slovenian Alps
An American man was killed this week in an apparent fall from a trail in the Slovenian Alps, authorities say.
The 33-year-old traveler, whose name has not been released, was on a journey to the top of Mount Triglav, the highest mountain in Slovenia with an elevation of more than 2,800 meters, when he disappeared on Monday, the STA news agency said, via the Associated Press.
Body discovered Tuesday morning
Search efforts uncovered the man's body around 1 a.m. Tuesday at the bottom of a trail near the Pokljuka Plateau, located in northwestern Slovenia. Police indicate it appeared the man suffered a steep fall.
While the man's name is still being kept under wraps, the STA said he was staying in a cabin near Bohinj Lake.
Slovenia is one of eight countries included in the Alps' span, along with Austria, France, Germany, Italy, Liechtenstein, Monaco and Switzerland.
Two deaths in less than one week
This tragic death is the second one in the last week involving an American outdoorsman.
On Monday, authorities suspended the search for Matthew Aldridge, 26, who went missing while attempting to climb Mount Hood, the tallest mountain in Oregon, on Saturday, Dec. 13.
The quest to find Aldridge, who had gone out with two fellow climbers and continued his ascent when the others elected to turn back, has been transitioned to a recovery effort, said the Hood River County Sheriff’s Office.
Cell phone data indicates Aldridge may have fallen from the mountain, police said.
“I just want him to be off the mountain,” Aldridge's mom Artie told Oregon Live. “I can’t leave him.”
