Actor Recalls 'Hostile' On-Set Fight Between Rob Reiner, 'Spoiled' Son Nick Before Alleged Murders
Stunt actor Erik Audé reflected to Page Six about the “hostile” exchange he witnessed between Rob Reiner and his “spoiled” son Nick Reiner on a film set. Nick was arrested on Sunday, Dec. 14, and charged with suspicion of murder in the stabbing deaths of Rob and his wife, Michele Singer Reiner.
Actor Witnessed 'Hostile' Exchange Between Rob and Nick Reiner
Audé was personally hired by Rob to perform stunts in his 2016 film Being Charlie, a screenplay co-written by Nick which depicted the younger Reiner’s battle with addiction in his teen years. Audé said that, when he arrived on the set, he was astonished to find Rob and Nick locked in a public argument. Audé’s memory aligns with reports that Rob and his son got into a “heated” argument at Conan O’Brien’s Christmas party just hours before the murders.
“They’re just going off on each other. You could tell [Nick] was spoiled and Rob was just sick of his s–t,” Audé said of his experience on Being Charlie, recalling that the room was thick with “tension.”
'A Spoiled Kid to a Tee'
“I just assumed, whether this is correct or not, this kid must be pushing all his buttons. Rob can’t do anything right,” Audé said. “He’s a nepo-baby, a spoiled kid to the tee. Obviously he loved his son because he’s doing this movie for his son, and still, his son was unappreciative.” Eventually, the two Reiners made up with “a kiss on the lips,” according to the stuntman.
Unfortunately, Audé wasn’t surprised when Nick was named as the primary suspect in his parents’ murders. “I picked up on all that hostility from just one day on set,” he claimed. “That’s how weird and awkward that exchange was. Families fight, but they do it in the privacy of their own home. People have a way of filtering themselves around other people. They didn’t.”
Sources Say Being Charlie Inflamed the Father and Son's Relationship
A separate source reported to Page Six that, although the experience of Being Charlie was intended to bring Rob and Nick closer together, it had the opposite effect. “Making the movie was meant to be a healing process for them both, but from what I heard, it did the opposite, and didn’t help their relationship at all,” the source claimed. “Working together on that project made their relationship worse, it seemed to increase the tension between them.”
Audé told the outlet that, despite his scene being cut from the finished film, he will always remember how “kind” Reiner was to give him the opportunity. “I respected him as a director, I respected him as an actor, I grew up enjoying his movies,” Audé said. “The guy was very talented…Thank you Rob for casting me in your movie—it was a wonderful core memory for me.”
