Winter Weather Warnings Issued in Multiple States for Additional 22 Inches of Snow
On Monday, Dec. 15, the National Weather Service (NWS) issued more winter storm warnings and advisories across the U.S., with some areas in line to get up to an additional 22 inches of snow.
According to the NWS, a winter storm warning is when "heavy snow of at least six inches in 12 hours, or at least eight inches in 24 hours, is expected." The NWS can also issue a winter storm warning "if sleet accumulation will be at least half an inch."
While the most hazardous winter storm warnings are in Alaska, areas of New York and much of the Eastern U.S. are also under weather alerts. A fresh winter weather advisory has been announced for areas of New York, while areas of Texas, Louisiana, Florida, Alabama and Georgia are under a freeze warning.
Weather Alerts in the Eastern U.S.
The NWS has issued winter weather advisories for areas of upstate New York, with the agency warning travelers that snow, ice and slippery roads may impact the Monday commute and beyond. The NWS also warns of wind chills as low as 20 below in areas of the northwest Pocahontas, southeast Randolph and western Greenbrier Counties in West Virginia.
"Very cold temperatures are expected today, with brisk west to northwest winds leading to wind chills below zero," the NWS in Albany stated on X on Monday, Dec. 15. "Max temps will be close to 15 degrees below normal today. Please use caution if venturing out this morning."
On Sunday, Dec. 14, the NWS in Albany cautioned travelers, noting, "Heavy snow showers tracking across southern VT through 8 p.m. this evening. Hazardous travel expected, especially on Rte 9 between Woodford and Searsburg. Expect snow covered roadways and significant reductions in visibility in these areas during this time."
Also, the NWS has issued freeze warnings in areas of the country that aren't used to such cold temperatures, including northern Florida, southeast Texas, southwest Louisiana, southeast Alabama and southern Georgia.
Areas With the Most Snow on Monday and Tuesday
The NWS says to expect a large snow event in Juneau, Alaska, noting, "Strongest snow rates are looking increasingly likely near the Icy Strait corridor [Sunday] evening, associated with the second wave of precipitation from the south. Another band of snow arrives on Monday for much of the Icy Strait Corridor as the Low stalls offshore."
They added, "More modest snow totals are expected from Monday morning onward for parts of the central panhandle, where warmer temperatures aloft and limited moisture will limit snow amounts."
Areas of Hyder are expected to get an additional 18 to 22 inches of snow, making travel hazardous.
