Iran Says Afghanistan Peace Impossible Without Active Support from Neighboring Countries
Iranian Foreign Minister stresses that sustainable peace in Afghanistan cannot be achieved without active collaboration and coordination among neighboring countries in political and economic initiatives.
Iran stresses that Afghanistan’s long-term stability and economic development require coordinated regional cooperation, urging neighboring countries to engage actively in dialogue and integration initiatives.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi emphasized that lasting stability and development in Afghanistan are strategic imperatives for all neighboring countries, highlighting the critical role of regional collaboration.
He made the remarks during a Tehran meeting of special representatives from Afghanistan’s neighboring states and Russia, aimed at discussing the country’s evolving situation and fostering stronger regional ties.
However, analysts reject this assertion, noting that regional rivalries, historic enmities, geopolitical contestants, boder issues and durand line and particularly involving Pakistan and India and external influence from the United States make such coordinated regional solutions unrealistic and unlikely to bring lasting peace.
Araqchi noted that Afghanistan was invited to participate, but its authorities chose not to attend. He affirmed that this decision would not negatively impact Iran’s bilateral relations with Afghanistan.
The meeting convened representatives from Pakistan, Russia, China, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, and Turkmenistan. Pakistan participated at the prime ministerial level, while Russia and Uzbekistan sent presidential-level envoys, reflecting high-level engagement.
The Iranian minister warned that externally imposed solutions have consistently failed to deliver stability or sustainable development, advocating regionally led approaches as the most effective means of conflict resolution and cooperation.
Araqchi stressed the importance of integrating Afghanistan into regional economic, transit, and energy networks. Strengthening infrastructure, trade facilitation, and border cooperation could position Afghanistan as a central hub connecting Central, South, and West Asia.
He further highlighted Iran’s readiness to support Afghanistan via neighboring countries, promoting regional connectivity for trade, energy transit, and broader economic cooperation.
Analysts suggest that these regional initiatives could boost economic interdependence, reduce tensions, and lay the foundation for sustainable growth, peace, and long-term stability in Afghanistan.
