U.S. Lawmaker Ilhan Omar Says ICE Agents Stopped Her Son in Minnesota
U.S. Representative Ilhan Omar said immigration agents stopped her son in Minnesota, accusing officers of racial profiling amid intensified enforcement targeting Somali communities.
U.S. Congresswoman Ilhan Omar of Minnesota has accused federal immigration officers of racial profiling after her son was stopped and asked to prove his U.S. citizenship, prompting a formal complaint to authorities.
In an interview with CBS News, Omar said the incident happened when her son was entering a Target store, where immigration agents stopped him and requested identification. He was released after presenting his U.S. passport.
Omar, a Somali-American lawmaker and outspoken critic of President Donald Trump, said her son now routinely carries his passport due to repeated concerns over such encounters.
She also claimed immigration officers had previously entered a mosque where her son and others were praying, adding to her fears about the growing presence of enforcement agents in everyday public spaces.
The Minnesota representative accused officers of targeting young men who appear Somali, describing the actions as racial profiling based on appearance rather than evidence of immigration violations.
The incident comes as U.S. immigration authorities reportedly increase enforcement actions against undocumented Somali migrants. Omar linked the rise in activity to earlier remarks by Donald Trump stating he did not want Somalis in the country.
According to U.S. census data, Minnesota has the largest Somali population in the United States, with about 107,000 residents. Omar has emphasized that more than 90 percent of Somali-Americans are U.S. citizens, while official figures show around 22,000 Somalis nationwide are not citizens.
