Celebrating Generosity: New Lightweight Men’s Launch Unveiled at Ely
On 23 November 2025, students and alumni gathered at Ely Boathouse for a special occasion: the unveiling of a new launch for the Lightweight Men’s squad, made possible through the generous support of our donors.
The launch, aptly named ‘Less is More’ by donors Jon Winny and Kate Hillier, was christened by 2026 President Josh Moore. This addition to the fleet will play a vital role in supporting the squad’s training and development in the lead-up to the Lightweight Men’s Boat Race on 3 April 2026 and beyond.
Reflecting on the day, Josh shared, ‘On behalf of the CUBC lightweight men, we are hugely grateful to Jon, Kate, and all the donors who have generously assisted in our purchase of the new squad launch. It was fantastic to welcome a handful of alumni to Ely in November to support the crews and take part in naming the launch—moments like these remind the squad how fiercely our alumni are committed to our success which is truly motivating. We are looking forward to showing our progress in training at Trial VIIIs on the 18th for those who are able to join us in Putney. The new launch is already in regular use and is proving particularly useful in the lead up to Trial Eights as coach Nick Acock dashes between two developing crews. This purchase will go a long way to ensuring we can make the best use of Nick’s coaching time and develop the strongest crew possible in our efforts to win the Lightweight Men’s Boat Race on 3rd April.’
The event was not only a celebration of a new piece of equipment but also a testament to the unwavering support of our alumni. Their presence and generosity not only provide our rowers with the resources they need to excel at the highest level, but also surround them with an encouraging community. We look forward to welcoming supporters to Trial Eights in Putney on 18 December and sharing the progress of the squad as they prepare for the remainder of the season.
