Australia Police Identify Father and Son as Suspects in Deadly Bondi Beach Shooting
Australian police say a father and son carried out a deadly shooting at Sydney’s Bondi Beach, killing 15 people, as authorities probe suspected terrorism motives.
Police in Australia’s New South Wales state say investigations are continuing into a mass shooting at Sydney’s Bondi Beach that killed 15 people and left at least 40 others hospitalized.
Authorities confirmed the attackers were a 50-year-old father and his 24-year-old son. The older man died at the scene, while the younger suspect remains in critical condition in hospital. Police said no other suspects are being sought.
The shooting occurred during a Hanukkah celebration attended by more than 1,000 people in a crowded coastal area. Police said the Jewish community was the intended target and are treating the incident as a terrorist attack.
Investigators said the 50-year-old suspect held a valid firearms licence, and six weapons registered in his name were recovered at the scene. The attackers are believed to have fired from near a pedestrian bridge overlooking the beach.
Video footage circulating online showed a bystander disarming one of the attackers with his bare hands. The man, identified as 43-year-old shop owner Ahmed Ahmad, was injured and later hospitalized, with state officials praising his actions as heroic.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese condemned the shooting as a targeted, antisemitic act, saying there is no place for hatred or violence in Australia and calling the attack an assault on the nation’s values.
The attack drew widespread international condemnation, including from Israel’s leadership, the United Nations, Britain’s King Charles III, Muslim community leaders in Australia, and Iran, highlighting global concern over rising antisemitic violence.
