Ahmed al Ahmed Hailed as Hero After Disarming Gunman in Australia’s Deadly Bondi Beach Shooting
Ahmed al Ahmed was hailed as a hero after tackling and disarming a gunman during Australia’s deadly Bondi Beach shooting, an act police say saved lives.
Australian authorities praised Ahmed al Ahmed after the Sydney bystander disarmed a gunman during the Bondi Beach shooting, saving lives amid chaos.
Police said video footage showed 43-year-old Ahmed al Ahmed approaching one attacker from behind, tackling him and seizing his firearm during the attack.
The footage, widely shared online, showed the disarmed gunman retreating toward a second shooter on a nearby pedestrian bridge as Ahmed placed the weapon aside.
Family members said Ahmed, a father of two from southern Sydney, was later shot twice and rushed to hospital, where his condition remains under review.
New South Wales Premier Chris Minns called Ahmed a hero, saying there was no doubt his actions prevented further loss of life.
Police Commissioner Mal Lanyon said Ahmed’s bravery reflected wider acts of courage by civilians who intervened during the shooting.
Authorities confirmed 16 people were killed, including one of the alleged attackers, identified as a 50-year-old man and his 24-year-old son.
The attack is the deadliest mass shooting in Australia since the 1996 Port Arthur massacre, renewing scrutiny over security and extremist violence.
