Resurfaced Report Has Fans Wondering What Really Happened During Owen Wilson & Sheryl Crow’s 90s Romance
We’re taking it back to the early 2000s, also known as the height of unexpected celebrity couples; and thanks to resurfaced reports, we’re reminded of one of the most unexpected couples: Sheryl Crow and Owen Wilson.
Thanks to UsMagazine, everyone is reminded that Crow wrote the hit song “Safe and Sound” about their relationship, and in 2025, people are desperate to know more after re-reading the lyrics.
Despite their obvious chemistry, within two years the relationship was over.
For the song she wrote about the Marry Me star, entitled “Safe and Sound,” it read: “Feel like I could’ve held on / Feel like I could’ve let go / Feel like I could’ve helped you / Feel like I could’ve changed you,” she sings. In the outro, Crow expresses: “I feel like I could have loved you / I feel like I really love you / Feel like I could’ve saved you.”
It definitely seems like a case of “right person, wrong time,” but even today, very little is known about their romance. But here’s what we do know:
For those who don’t know, Wilson and Crow met on the set of the 1999 thriller The Minus Man, and in the film, her character was murdered by Wilson’s. Almost immediately after, they started dating and made their red carpet debut at the 41st Annual Grammy Awards.
Despite making quite a few red carpet appearances, they were super private about their relationship.
It’s not clear what caused the breakup, but many believe Wilson was the one to end things. In a previous interview with Playboy in 2005 (via Contact Music), Wilson did imply that his behavior was the reason behind their 2001 breakup.
“The story of our relationship is the same story I’ve had with most relationships,” he said. “I was lucky enough to find a great girl, and because of my lack of… focus, the relationship went south.”
