Trump Promises Strong Retaliation After ISIS Kills U.S. Soldiers, Interpreter in Syria
President Trump warned that the recent ISIS attack in Syria, which killed U.S. soldiers and an interpreter, will face immediate and serious retaliation.
Two U.S. soldiers and an American civilian interpreter were killed in an ISIS-linked attack near Palmyra, central Syria, on Saturday, December 13, 2025. Three other U.S. soldiers were wounded when the group, conducting a key engagement with local leaders, was ambushed in an area not fully controlled by the Syrian government.
U.S. Central Command confirmed that the lone attacker was neutralized by partner forces at the scene. Pentagon spokesperson Sean Parnell said the mission was part of ongoing counter-terrorism operations against ISIS and regional extremist threats.
President Donald Trump condemned the attack, calling it an ISIS attack against the U.S. and Syria and warned of very serious retaliation against future threats to American personnel.
U.S. Secretary of War Pete Hegseth added that anyone targeting Americans would face relentless pursuit, emphasizing that the United States is committed to protecting its forces worldwide.
The attack underscores that ISIS sleeper cells remain active, posing ongoing risks even years after the group lost its territorial control in Syria. U.S. forces continue to operate alongside local partners to prevent the resurgence of extremist networks.
The deadly ambush near Palmyra highlights the continuing volatility in Syria and the persistent threat posed by ISIS, reinforcing Washington’s commitment to counter-terrorism operations and strong retaliation against attacks on its personnel.
