Iran says stability in Afghanistan is vital for regional security at Tehran talks
Iran said stability in Afghanistan is a strategic necessity for regional security as neighbouring countries met in Tehran to discuss cooperation, dialogue mechanisms and future economic coordination.
Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said on Sunday that stability in Afghanistan is a strategic necessity for the entire region, stressing that the country’s security is directly linked to the interests of all its neighbours. He made the remarks at a regional meeting on Afghanistan hosted in Tehran.
The meeting brought together special envoys from Russia, Pakistan, China, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan to discuss regional coordination on Afghanistan. The Taliban declined to attend the talks, despite being invited, Iranian officials said.
Araghchi called for the creation of regular dialogue mechanisms among Afghanistan’s neighbouring countries, saying such forums help prevent misunderstandings and allow coordination on economic, border, humanitarian and security issues. He said regional cooperation could reduce tensions and promote constructive engagement.
The Iranian foreign minister also warned against external interference, saying no extra-regional solution could resolve regional crises. He argued that imported policies and decisions imposed from outside the region have failed to bring lasting stability to countries facing conflict.
Ahead of the meeting, Iran hosted Afghanistan political groups opposed to the Taliban under a joint initiative aimed at encouraging political dialogue. The groups issued a statement calling for a negotiated political solution to Afghanistan’s ongoing crisis.
Hanif Atmar, a politician, described the Tehran meeting as an important opportunity to advance the political process. He urged regional countries to support the launch of inclusive intra-Afghanistan talks under United Nations facilitation.
The Tehran talks highlighted growing regional concern over Afghanistan’s future and the risks posed by prolonged instability. While divisions remain, regional actors appear increasingly aligned on the need for dialogue, cooperation and a political solution driven by countries directly affected by the crisis.
