Sports briefs: Marin Catholic stays unbeaten with win against Marin Academy
Rhys Jones scored on a penalty kick and the Marin Catholic boys soccer team benefitted from an own goal in a 2-1 victory against Marin Academy on Saturday.
Goalie Carter Matza produced a few saves for MC (4-0-0) as Marin Academy (0-2-1) created plenty of chances. MA’s goal came on a penalty kick.
- Archie Williams scored a flurry of three goals in the final 15 minutes of the first half then needed an insurance goal by Eleazar Lopez in second-half stoppage time to hold on for a 5-3 win against Alisal at the Mission City Invitational on Friday night. Sean Chamberlin gave the Peregrine Falcons (3-2) a 1-0 lead before Henry Miller, Devin Singh and Dillon Parsons added goals for a 4-0 halftime lead. Alisal scored three times in the final 15 minutes to make it close.
- Tyson Sullivan scored about 25 minutes into the first half as Terra Linda secured a 1-0 victory against Madera South at the Mission City Invitational on Saturday. Anderson Alvarez-Santiago provided the assist for TL (2-3), which has won two straight after dropping its first three games.
- Aaron Ochoa and Jack Whitmore had goals as San Marin battled Tennyson to a 2-2 draw on Saturday. Dylan Garcia had an assist for the Mustangs (0-2-2).
- Novato (0-2-1) had a rough go of it Saturday, taking a 6-0 road loss to Rancho Cotate.
Girls soccer
Julia Myerberg scored one goal and assisted on two others as Branson posted a 4-1 win against University on Saturday. Myerberg scored in the seventh minute, assisted by Luna Diaz, to put the Bulls (5-1-1) ahead 1-0. Diaz got onto the scoresheet in the 11th minute, assisted by Cat Howell. Myerberg had an assist to Tara Penczak in the 30th minute for a 3-0 lead. Howell capped the scoring in the 66th minute following Myerberg’s second assist.
- Darby Fones scored on a free kick then added an assist to Brooklyn Cox during San Rafael’s 3-2 win against Bentley on Saturday. Joselin Romero provided the winner for the Bulldogs (7-0-2), assisted by Ashanti Solano.
- Archie Williams (3-2) secured its third consecutive win following a 1-0 win against Miramonte on Saturday. Leta Benson scored in the 55th minute off an assist by Bailey Benson. Anya Penwarden and Addison Clark scored goals in Archie William’s previous 1-0 wins this week — against Pinole Valley and University, respectively.
- San Marin (5-0-2) and Rancho Cotate battled to a 0-0 draw on Friday night.
- Tam (0-5-1) and Petaluma were unable to find the back of the net in a 0-0 stalemate on Saturday. Petaluma (1-0-5) has played four Marin teams — San Marin, Redwood, Branson, and Tam — and tied in all four games.
- Marin Catholic (1-1-2) took its first loss of the season, falling 1-0 at Casa Grande on a goal by Bailey Guerrero in the 71st minute. Nora Snearly hit the crossbar twice for MC. Goalie Juliana Sokolov made a number of key saves, according to MC coach Elizabeth Snearly.
- Marin Academy (4-1-0) sustained its first defeat of the season after being called for an inadvertent hand ball at the edge of the 18-yard box, resulting in a penalty kick that Piedmont converted for a 1-0 victory on Saturday.
- Terra Linda (4-3-1) fell 5-0 at home against Montgomery on Saturday.
Men’s basketball
Former Branson and Redwood High standout Semetri Carr made his first start for Cal in a 79-70 victory against Northwestern State on Saturday.
Carr produced career highs with 14 points and seven assists — also pulling down four rebounds — for the Bears (10-1). Carr is averaging 5.1 points and 3.2 rebounds in nine appearances this season.
- Former Marin Catholic standout AJ Rohosy made eight of his nine shot attempts en route to a season high 20-points to help Stanford secure an 86-82 victory against San Jose State on Saturday. Rohosy also pulled down eight rebounds and had a pair of assists.
Cross country
James Nielsen and Claire Nielsen, both representing North Bay Track Club, placed in the top 10 in their respective races at the USATF Cross Country Junior Olympic National Championships in Shelbyville, Ind. on Saturday.
James Nielsen, a freshman at San Domenico, placed eighth in the Boys 13-14 4K race with a time of 13 minutes, 34.6 seconds. Claire Nielsen, a seventh grader at Sinaloa Middle in Novato, finished 10th in the Girls 11-12 3K race in 11:33.7. Both Nielsens finished as All-Americans inside the top 25.
- Branson’s Farah Allen competed at the Brooks National XC Championships at Balboa Park in San Diego on Saturday. Allen placed 41st in the event with a time of 18:42.2.
