First 'Supergirl' Trailer Introduces a Cynical Superhero

Supergirl is pissed—and her dog, Krypto, is pissing on things—in the first trailer for the upcoming DC Universe movie. If Superman is an upstanding hero with great morals, his cousin Kara is disheveled and cynical.

The trailer, released on December 11, is the best look fans have gotten at the upcoming film since Milly Alock's Supergirl made a cameo appearance at the end of Superman, when she arrived at the Fortress of Solitude to pick up Krypto from her cousin (David Corenswet).

Supergirl, which will hit theaters on June 26, 2026, is a sci-fi adventurewith shades of Guardians of the Galaxy. (It makes sense; those Marvel movies that were directed by James Gunn, who is now responsible for overseeing the rebooted DC film series.) While Superman was largely set on Earth and had Superman attempting to save the day from Lex Luthor, Supergirl will be set on alien worlds and in alien nightclubs while Kara Zor-El attempts to party her problems away.

As the trailer hints, the biggest difference between Supergirl and Superman is that Kara actually remembers life on Krypton, as she evacuated the planet when she was a young adult whereas her cousin left when he was just an infant. Because of this, she mourns the world that she lost. Earth is Superman's home; Krypton was Kara's. It makes sense, then, that she would be a jaded person who traverses the galaxy trying to get drunk.

"He sees the good in everyone," Supergirl says of her cousin at the end of the trailer. "And I see the truth."

The Trailer Previews Supergirl's Meeting With Ruthye Marye Knoll

The Supergirl movie is mostly based on Tom King’s 2022 acclaimed comic book series Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, which had Supergirl encounter a young alien girl named Ruthye Marye Knoll who is looking to get vengeance on Krem of the Yellow Hill, who killed her father. Kara decides to join in on this quest. In Supergirl, Knoll is played by Eve Ridley, an actress who appeared in Netflix's 3 Body Problem series. The trailer shows her first meeting with Kara as she asks questions about the fate of Krypton. Matthias Schoenaerts of The Old Guard plays Krem of the Yellow Hills.

The trailer also features a brief, shadowy glimpse of the alien bounty hunter Lobo, played by Jason Momoa.

And, of course, Krypto the Superdog is prominently featured in the trailer, as it opens with him peeing on a newspaper with Superman's face on it. A groggy Supergirl compliments her pooch for getting "most of it" on the paper this time. Being a responsible pet owner is clearly not one of her superpowers.

Supergirl, directed by Craig Gillespie, comes out in theaters on June 26, 2026
