Iran Deports 1.8 Million Migrants to Afghanistan via Islam Qala Border
Iran has deported around 1.8 million Afghan migrants this year through the Islam Qala border, marking one of the largest repatriation waves to Afghanistan.
Iranian media report that approximately 1.8 million Afghan migrants have returned to Afghanistan this year via the Islam Qala border, in what officials describe as a significant wave of repatriations.
Tasnim News Agency cited the governor of Khorasan Razavi province on Monday, who said part of the deportations occurred from his province, with the remainder coming from 11 other provinces across Iran.
Local outlets have described the influx as the largest mass return of Afghanistan migrants in recent years, underscoring the scale of the migration trend.
Officials say the increase in returns followed regional tensions, including Israel’s recent military actions, which Iranian authorities say influenced the flow of Afghan migrants.
Although the repatriation process is ongoing, reports indicate the number of daily returns has slowed compared to the peak during the summer months.
Observers warn that continued deportations may create humanitarian challenges, including strain on border facilities and limited access to essential services for returnees.
Humanitarian groups have called on Iranian authorities to ensure safe, orderly returns while providing support to vulnerable Afghan families during this ongoing repatriation wave.
