NFL Fans Sear Tony Romo for His Performance During Ravens-Steelers
Another NFL Sunday, another batch of searing reviews about Tony Romo.
The divisive CBS analyst was on the call for the Pittsburgh Steelers' upset 27-22 win over the Baltimore Ravens. Playing on the road, the Steelers held on to win when a late Ravens touchdown was overturned via replay review. The critical play happened when receiver Isaiah Likely secured a pass from Lamar Jackson in the end zone, but officials ruled he never held possession of the football.
Even though Romo disagreed with the reversal, viewers hoping for insight analysis were disappointed.
"Look at the replay... boom," is all he offered.
Romo's lackluster performance during the crucial divisional matchup represents the continuation of a long trend.
What Are Fans Saying About Romo?
The most commonly cited complaints about Romo are his apparent lack of preparation and awkward banter with partner Jim Nantz. On Sunday, those criticisms arose again.
"Romo’s announcing has gotten lazy. Dude doesn’t do his homework. Just talks a bunch," posted a Steelers fan, while another said it "feels like punishment" whenever Romo is in the booth.
When Romo debuted on CBS in 2017, the ex-Dallas Cowboys QB was lauded for his insight and Nostradamus-like tendencies. Oftentimes, he called out plays before they happened, signaling a deep understanding of coaches and schemes.
Now retired for nearly a decade, Romo's first hand knowledge of players and coaches is greatly diminished. He seemingly hasn't put forth the requisite effort towards closing his knowledge gap.
"I need a Romo break. Just one week where I don't have to hear him," added NFL writer Scott Kacsmar.
When Romo was adding insight, his propensity for malapropisms and unusual vocal affectations were considered endearing. Now, many find his hyperactive style to be irritating.
"Can not express how much I dislike listening to Tony Romo try and be a comedian in the booth," added a writer from Barstool Sports.

CBS' Attempted "Romo Intervention"
Three years ago, CBS executives reportedly staged an "intervention" with Romo to try and get their star commentator back on track. But his performance did not improve.
In a recent piece on Awful Announcing, CBS' deal with Romo was excoriated as "one of the worst decisions in sports media." Five years ago, the network inked Romo to a then-record setting 10-year, $180 million contract.
Given the NFL's dominance, Romo's commentary doesn't have a discernible impact on ratings. But it does impact whether fans enjoy the viewing experience.
With the playoffs coming up next month, there is going to be a lot more Romo in NFL fans' lives. That probably means many, many more complaints.
