Trump approval ticks up to 43 percent: NYT poll

President Trump’s approval rating ticked up 1 point to 43 percent, according to the latest New York Times/Siena University poll.

The survey, conducted last week, shows a net 43 percent of registered voters approve and a net 54 percent disapprove of the president’s handling of his job. That includes 29 percent who “strongly approve” and 46 percent who “strongly disapprove.”

The results are statistically similar to the previous Times/Siena poll, conducted in April, which found 42 percent of respondents approved of the president — with 28 percent “strongly” approving — and 54 percent disapproved of the president — with 45 percent “strongly” disapproving.

The latest poll shows an uptick among independent voters, with 35 percent approving in the latest survey, up from 29 percent in April; disapproval among independent voters dropped to 61 percent in the latest survey, down from 66 percent in the last poll.

Approval among Democrats, meanwhile, dropped 2 points from April to 4 percent in the latest survey; among Republicans, approval ticked up 3 points to 89 percent in the recent poll.

A noticeable shift in the polling becomes clear when voters are asked about Trump’s effect on the economy and about the effect of his policies.

In the latest poll, 32 percent of respondents say Trump has made the economy better since taking office — up from 21 percent. The share who say Trump has made the economy worse also dropped 5 points from April, to 45 percent in the latest poll.

The share of voters who say Trump’s policies have hurt them personally has remained stable at 36 percent. But some voters who said in April that Trump’s policies have “not made much of a difference either way” now say the policies have helped them personally.

Today, 26 percent say his policies help them personally, up from 17 percent in April; and 40 percent say they haven’t noticed a difference, down from 45 percent in April.

The poll of 1,313 registered voters was conducted from Sept. 22 to 27, 2025. The margin of error is 3.2 percentage points.
