Al Jazeera Journalist Killed in Israeli Strike on Gaza
At least five Al Jazeera journalists were killed in an Israeli strike near Gaza City’s al-Shifa Hospital. The victims included correspondents Anas al-Sharif and Mohammed Qreiqeh, along with cameramen Ibrahim Zaher, Moamen Aliwa, and Mohammed Noufal, the broadcaster reported.
They were among seven people killed when an Israeli attack struck a press tent positioned outside the hospital’s main gate, according to Al Jazeera.
Al Jazeera says its senior correspondent in Gaza, Anas al-Sharif, was killed on Sunday along with four colleagues in an Israeli strike near al-Shifa Hospital.
The network reported that the 28-year-old journalist was shot while inside a tent designated for reporters outside the hospital’s main gate. He was widely known for his coverage from northern Gaza.
Also killed were journalist Mohammed Qureiqah and cameramen Ibrahim Zaher and Mohammed Noufel, and Moamen Aliwa all working for Al Jazeera’s Arabic service.
The Israeli military confirmed it targeted al-Sharif, accusing him of leading a Hamas cell responsible for organizing rocket attacks on Israeli civilians and military forces.
In a statement, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said al-Sharif “served as the leader of a Hamas terrorist cell” and played a key role in advancing such attacks.
Al Jazeera strongly rejected the allegations, calling them false, and recently accused the Israeli military of conducting an “incitement campaign” against its journalists in Gaza.
In July, IDF spokesperson Avichay Adraee shared a video on social media repeating the Hamas affiliation claim, which the network dismissed as an attempt to justify targeting journalists.
The incident is expected to intensify criticism of Israel’s actions toward the press in Gaza, with press freedom advocates likely to demand an independent and transparent investigation.
