Coldplay singer Chris Martin makes 'couple' joke shortly after viral incident

(NEXSTAR) – Coldplay’s Chris Martin wasn’t about to make the same assumption twice.

A clip from a Coldplay concert in Massachusetts recently went viral after Martin, the band’s lead singer, saw two concertgoers on the stadium’s jumbotron and initially assumed he was looking at a couple enjoying the show. But after they hastily hid their faces from view, Martin joked to the crowd that “either they’re having an affair or they’re just very shy.”

The incident soon led to speculation that the couple was indeed hiding a secret. Internet sleuths have since claimed to have identified the concertgoers, leading to a bit of a scandal that some have dubbed “Coldplaygate.”

After the initial incident, however, Martin made sure not to make assumptions about any lovebirds who appeared on the jumbotron. In another clip from Coldplay's Massachusetts show that has since been shared to social media, Martin was heard trying to clarify the relationship status of two other fans.

“OK, now listen: Are you two a couple? Are you two a legitimate couple?” he asked after seeing them on the jumbotron, the clip shows.

When the concertgoers don’t give a clear response, Martin jokes that he’s going to “risk it” anyway, and launches into a song.

“Martin’s a fast learner,” one of the clip’s viewers wrote on X, while another joked that “he got PTSD from the previous couple.”

“Bro turned into Maury mid-concert,” said another X user, making reference to “The Maury Povich Show,” which frequently dealt with topics of infidelity.

Coldplay, which is currently on its “Music of the Spheres” world tour, played at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts, on July 15 and 16.

The band had not made any official statements concerning the so-called “Coldplaygate” as of Friday. Nexstar has not independently verified the identity of the individuals seen in the initial viral video.
