Why Lorde's Visit to 'John Proctor Is The Villain' on Broadway Was Such a Big Deal
Lorde finally attended a performance of the Broadway play John Proctor is the Villain this weekend and her visit to the play is actually a really big deal.
For those who don’t know, John Proctor is the Villain is a new play on Broadway that received seven Tony nominations and has earned tons of acclaim, both from critics and fans. While Lorde doesn’t actually appear in the play, one of her songs is used for an extremely important moment in the show.
Playwright Kimberly Belflower has previously opened up about how she wrote a heartfelt letter to Lorde to get permission to use “Green Light” in the show. She has even said that she likely would have scrapped the entire play if Lorde said no!
Well, Lorde showed up to catch one of Sadie Sink‘s final performances in the play on Friday (July 11) at the Booth Theatre in New York City.

Kimberly wrote on Instagram, “I’ve been working on John Proctor is the Villain for seven years. From the very first draft, it ended in a dance and the dance was always always ‘Green Light.’ JPITV simply doesn’t work without that song.”
“To make the art I needed to make, I needed Lorde’s art. Her art has transformed my spirit over and over again and given me names to feelings I didn’t know how to articulate. Her art has been my teacher and my companion, in hard moments and glorious moments, in headphones on city streets, in cars on mountain back roads, in my very marrow. To share this play with her, to watch her hands dance in the air while her music blasts through the Booth Theatre, to look her in the eye and (attempt to) tell her what she means to me, to see her take such care with everyone who made this production, to hug her, to watch her stage door (!!!?!??) was maybe the most surreal and beautiful night in this entire surreal and beautiful journey,” Kimberly added. “I will never ever ever forget it or get over it. I love you, @lorde. I love you, @johnproctorbway. I love your perfect photos, @michaelah.jpg.”
Lorde commented on the post, “Thank you for choosing me Kimberly I will remember last night forever ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️.”
Sadie played her final performance in the play on July 13. Chiara Aurelia is stepping into her role through the play’s final show on August 31. Get tickets now!
