Alasdair Gold shares his understanding on whether Tottenham would spend £100m for Adam Wharton
Tottenham Hotspur have been ramping up their transfer activity ahead of the start of the new season under new head coach Thomas Frank.
A £55million transfer for Mohammed Kudus from West Ham was nearly followed by a deal for Morgan Gibbs-White, which has since been held up by Nottingham Forest.
Tottenham had earlier brought in Kevin Danso on a permanent basis following his loan spell and also took up the option for Mathys Tel from Bayern Munich to keep him in North London.
Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano recently admitted that Europa League champions are in the market for a midfielder once they try to seal the Gibbs-White deal to further improve the Tottenham first-team squad ahead of the 2025/26 campaign.
Adam Wharton is admired by Tottenham Hotspur
It was reported earlier this week that Tottenham are interested in Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton, who has been identified as a dream signing.
Respected football journalist Alasdair Gold was asked for his understanding of the prospect of Wharton making the move to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium this summer.
Gold highlighted the fact Tottenham have been long-term admirers of the 21-year-old since he was a player at Blackburn Rovers prior to his initial £18m move to Palace in February 2024, which could rise to £22m depending on add-ons.
Palace value Wharton at £100m and Gold believes that such a hefty transfer fee would see Tottenham set their sights on investing that amount of money in a more experienced player.
He wrote in his Q&A for Football.London: “Wharton is certainly a player that Tottenham have liked for a few seasons and they considered making a move for him when Palace signed him from Blackburn early last year for a deal worth up to £22m.
“Could I see Spurs paying a £100million fee for him? I would be surprised if Tottenham shelled out that amount right now and if they did pay such a sum it’d probably be for someone more established than having played 36 Premier League games.”

A move for Wharton this summer would be surprise
With Tottenham having already shelled out £55million for Kudus and will have to pay £60m to trigger Gibbs-White’s release clause, it seems unlikely that Daniel Levy would be prepared to part with a club-record transfer fee for Adam Wharton.
Wharton has four years left to run on his existing contract at Selhurst Park which puts the Eagles in a strong negotiating position.
There is no doubt that Wharton is one of the brightest prospects in England, but Tottenham could really do with some experience if they are to look to challenge in the Premier League and Champions League.
Lucas Bergvall and Archie Gray have had a taste of regular first-team football last season and have shown they are more than capable of featuring again under Thomas Frank, rather than being relegated to bit-part roles at the expense of a big-money signing.
