Iranian President reportedly injured in Israeli Airstrikes
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian was reportedly injured while escaping an underground shelter during Israeli airstrikes targeting a Tehran facility.
Iranian media outlets, including the state-affiliated Fars News Agency, have reported that Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian sustained minor injuries while fleeing an underground facility targeted in an Israeli airstrike. The incident reportedly occurred on Monday, June 16, during the 12-day conflict between Israel and Iran.
According to the report, the Israeli attack struck a secured basement-level meeting involving senior Iranian leadership in a building in western Tehran. Israeli forces launched six bombs or missiles, aiming to seal entry and exit points, thereby disrupting ventilation and escape routes—tactics similar to those previously used against Hezbollah leadership in Lebanon.
Following the blasts, the power was reportedly cut in the facility. Iranian officials, including President Pezeshkian, escaped through an emergency shaft, though several—including Pezeshkian—suffered minor injuries to their legs during the evacuation.
Fars News noted the precision of the strike has raised suspicions about an intelligence leak or insider involvement. Iranian intelligence services have launched investigations to determine if the attack was facilitated by a mole within the regime.
Previously, Israel’s Defense Minister acknowledged having contingency plans to assassinate key Iranian leaders, including Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, although he said the operation was never executed due to strategic constraints.
The strike was part of a broader Israeli campaign targeting Iran’s military and nuclear infrastructure, which resulted in the elimination of dozens of senior Iranian figures and temporary Israeli control over Iranian airspace, according to regional defense sources.
Independent Iranian media suggest that weeks after the ceasefire, many officials remain in hiding or have adopted underground lifestyles, fearing further targeted strikes or domestic instability.
International analysts view the incident as a critical blow to Iran’s leadership confidence and a stark reminder of Israel’s regional intelligence and military reach amid escalating shadow conflicts.
