Mariners Game #96 Preview: 7/14, at Detroit
M’s to try to sweep Tigers in last game before the break
Seattle’s offense has been running hotter than a Pontiac Firebird the past couple days, scoring more runs over a two-game stretch than the team has in a decade. To complete the sweep, the Mariners will have to take down Detroit’s Jack Flaherty in their final game before the All-Star break. Theoretically, that should be an easier task than taming the Tigers’ pair of All-Star starters in Tarik Skubal and Casey Mize, but then there’s a lot of things about the Mariners that should work in theory.
Facing off against Flaherty will be Logan Gilbert, who hopes to bounce back after his worst outing of the season against the Yankees on Tuesday. If he pitches into the seventh inning today, it’ll be the first time he’s done so since Opening Day, but with the break coming up, there's no need to worry about taxing the bullpen.
Lineups
It’s a DH day for Cal Raleigh, who will get less of a break than the rest of the team when he competes in tomorrow’s T-Mobile Home Run Derby and then starts the All-Star Game on Tuesday. For the Tigers, Parker Meadows is back in center field after a pair of boners in back-to-back games got him a day off yesterday.

Yesterday was the 2025 Futures Game in Atlanta. The Mariners had three players in the game: Lazaro Montes who walked in his only PA, Harry Ford, who struck out but threw out a runner trying to steal third, and Jurrangelo Cijntje, who recorded outs from both the left and right side in his one-hit, two-strikeout inning.
Today in Mariners History
- 1995: The Mariners recorded their ninth triple play in team history. Pitcher Jeff Nelson let a popped-up bunt drop, then threw to shortstop Luis Sojo who tagged the runner off second, stepped on second and tossed to, Joey Cora, covering first base. Joey Cora will coach third base for the Tigers today.
- 1997: The Mariners and Rangers combine for a record 31 strikeouts in a nine-inning game. Randy Johnson accounted for the most, with 14 over seven innings. I was actually at this game and have a vivid sense-memory of learning what a backwards K meant.
- 2022: The Mariners win games 9 and 10 of their 14-game winning streak, taking both games of a doubleheader in Washington. Every member of Seattle’s bullpen pitches over the two games, but Andrés Muñoz is the only one to ride in the bullpen cart.
