ZIMBABWE football legend Gibson Homela celebrated his 79th birthday on Sunday surrounded by family, friends, and football royalty.
However, it was the surprise “juju” confession from fellow Zimbabwe Saints trustee Vincent Pamire that got proceedings feisty.
Speaking at the celebration, Pamire reminisced about their football journey at Zimbabwe Saints, revealing how he eventually began to believe in juju, thanks to some mysterious incidents during their playing days.
Homela was first spotted at Gafa Grounds in 1963, alongside Alick Mwanza and William Sibanda, while they were still students at Fletcher High School. The trio joined Mashonaland FC in Bulawayo.
When the club split in 1965 into Mashonaland FC and Mashonaland United, Homela stuck with the former, which eventually became Zimbabwe Saints in 1975.
He started out as a striker before switching to defence — a position in which he went on to shine for both Rhodesia and Zimbabwe. After hanging up his boots, Homela went on to coach the national team and several local clubs.
The celebration was a tribute to a man whose name remains etched in local football history, and whose journey is still inspiring generations.
