Amazon warehouse site plans proposed in Schoharie
SCHOHARIE, NY. (NEWS10) -- The proposal for a new Amazon "Last Mile" warehouse is in the hands of Schoharie Planning Board members. The facility's site plans will be reviewed at the next planning board meeting on July 15 at 7 p.m. in the Schoharie Town Hall.
The proposed facility for 232 Route 30 in Schoharie would be roughly 225,345 square feet, have 15 loading docks, 17 trailer parking spaces, and 1,055 off-street parking spaces. Officials said the warehouse would primarily serve as the last stop a package makes before being delivered, speeding up the delivery process.
In planning documents, Amazon stated the new warehouse would create 50 to 150 full-time jobs and hundreds of part-time and seasonal positions. Amazon said the warehouse would have three types of jobs, including sortation, Delivery Service Partners, and managers. Officials said the facility would have minimal air quality, traffic, and noise.
For frontline employees, Amazon said the proposed warehouse would run a pre-paid tuition program called Career Choice. Career Choice offers hourly employees access to ESL, GED, and other job training certificates while prepaying the student's college tuition, books, or other fees.
Amazon consultant McFarland Johnson is planning a traffic impact and noise study, which is expected to be submitted to the Schoharie planning board members and New York State Department of Transportation by August 4. Amazon stated in site planning documents that the company's growth in New York stems from the workforce, local support, and a rise in customer demand.
