Capital Region school districts adjust schedules to prepare for extreme heat
ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- Temperatures are already starting to rise as the season's first heatwave rolls into the Capital Region. In anticipation of the forecasted extreme heat, schools throughout the area are making scheduling adjustments to ensure student safety.
Temperatures and humidity are expected to spike going into Monday and Tuesday, with heat index values reaching over 100 degrees both afternoons. Heat advisories have already gone into effect for portion of the Capital Region, and extreme heat warnings will be put in place for counties on Monday at 11 a.m.
It's the last week of school for districts around the region, and Regents Exams will be taking place throughout the week. To prepare for the forecast, many districts have switched to half-day schedules on Monday and/or Tuesday and made other accommodations for those taking tests.
Take a look below for the scheduling adjustments and other changes announced by Capital Region school districts so far:
Albany County
City School District of Albany
- All activities to be moved indoors
- Air conditioning to operate on 24-hour cycles throughout the week
- All employees and students encouraged to wear lightweight and loose-fitting clothing and stay hydrated
Bethlehem Central School District
- Elementary schools to operate on half-day schedule on Monday and Tuesday, with dismissal at 11:50 a.m.
- Middle school to operate on half-day schedule on Monday and Tuesday, with dismissal at 11:10 a.m.
- Exams at high school will take place as schedule, with air conditioning being added to Gym B and students moved to other air-conditioned locations
Guilderland Central School District
- Farnsworth Middle School to be closed on Monday for repairs following water main break that occurred on Friday; Checkpoint A exam to be given on Tuesday
- Elementary buildings to release at 11:05 a.m. on Monday, transportation provided but no lunch served
- Farnsworth Middle School to release at 12:15 p.m., transportation provided but no lunch served
Menands Union Free School District
- Students to be dismissed at 11:30 a.m. on Monday, lunch will not be served
- PreK to be dismissed at 11 a.m.
- CYC Aftercare is canceled
- Talent Show & Senior Walk is canceled -- students who would still like to share their talent are encouraged to send a video to toconnell@menands.org to be shared on district Youtube channel
- Students encouraged to dress appropriately and bring water bottle
North Colonie Central School District
- Grades K-8 will have a half day on Monday
- Shaker Middle School to be dismissed at 11:15 a.m., no lunch provided
- Elementary schools to be dismissed at 12:15 p.m.
- Regents and local exams at Shaker High School will continue as scheduled in air conditioned spaces; transportation provided
Columbia County
Chatham Central School District
- Grades PK to 8 to be released early
- Grades 6-8 dismissal: 11:50 a.m.
- Grades PK-5 dismissal: 12 p.m.
- Any planned outdoor activities, included MED Field Day to be amended -- watch for specific details from your child's building
- 8th grade field trip to continue as scheduled, with all activities moved indoors
- After School Program canceled on Monday
Ichabod Crane Central School District
- Grades K-8 to have half days on Monday and Tuesday
- Primary school: Guardian pick-up to begin at 11:30 a.m. with dismissal at 11:40 a.m.; buses to depart at about 11:45 a.m.
- Middle School: Students to be dismissed at 11:42 a.m. with guardian pick-up beginning at 11:45 a.m.
- O.K. Kids to be closed for afternoon care on Monday and Tuesday
- Regents Exams to continue at high school as planned
New Lebanon Central School District
- Grades Pre-K through 6 to have half day
- Regents Exams to take place at high school as scheduled
Fulton County
Broadalbin-Perth Central School District
- Elementary students to have half day on Monday, with dismissal between 11 a.m. and 11:30 a.m.; junior high field trip to go on as scheduled on Monday
- All students to have half day on Tuesday
- Junior high students to be dismissed at 10:30 a.m.
- Elementary students to be dismissed between 11 a.m. and 11:30 a.m.
- B-P Elementary School after-school program to operate as usual on Monday and Tuesday
- All employees to follow full-day schedules for both days
Wheelerville Union Free School
- Grades Pre-K through 8 to be dismissed at 11:30 a.m. on Monday and Tuesday

Canajoharie Central School District
- Students to be dismissed at 11:15 a.m. on Monday
- Kindergarten graduation and 5th Grade Moving Up Ceremony to go on as scheduled at high school
Rensselaer County
Averill Park Central School District
- Grades K-8 to be released early on Monday and Tuesday
- Algonquin Middle School dismissal: 10:55 a.m.
- Elementary schools dismissal: 12 p.m.
- High school students taking physics exam on Tuesday who need transportation home will need to contact main office at (518) 674-7002 or email Assistant Principal Mr. Klauber at klaubere@apcsd.org
Brunswick-Brittonkill Central School District
- Grades PK-8 to follow half-day dismissal schedule on Monday and Tuesday
- Middle school dismissal: 10:30 a.m.
- Elementary dismissal to begin at 11:20 a.m. with buses dismissed at 11:40 a.m.
- No childcare offered
- High school students to report to school only if they have scheduled exam, Regents Exams to proceed as scheduled
East Greenbush Central School District
- Grades PK-8 to follow half-day schedule on Monday and Tuesday
- Goff: 10:40 a.m.
- Pre-K (DPS/Genet/Green Meadow/Red Mill): 10:45 a.m.
- Genet: 11:15 a.m.
- Bell Top: 11:30 a.m.
- DPS: 11:30 a.m.
- Green Meadow: 11:30 a.m.
- Red Mill: 11:30 a.m.
- High school students to take Regents and local exams as scheduled in air-conditioned spaces
Saratoga County
Corinth Central School District
- Grades UPK through 8 to follow half-day schedule on Monday and Tuesday
- Corinth Elementary School (UPK-4th grade): 11 a.m.
- Middle School (Grades 5-8): 11:15 a.m.
- The 7th Grade Awards Assembly will begin at 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday (originally scheduled for 9 a.m.)
- The 6th Grade Awards Assembly will begin at 10 a.m. on Tuesday (originally scheduled for 12 p.m.)
- The 5th Grade field trip scheduled for Tuesday has been postponed and will be rescheduled for early fall
- All Regents exams to be held at originally scheduled times, with testing locations moved to air-conditioned spaces
Schenectady County
Schenectady City School District
- Grades Pre-K through 8 to operate under a half-day schedule all week
- Elementary school dismissal: 11 a.m.
- Middle school dismissal: 11:45 a.m.
- Regents will take place at high school as scheduled
Scotia-Glenville Central School District
- Grades K-5 to have half days on Monday and Tuesday
- Middle and high school students to follow regular schedules
Washington County
Granville Central School District
- UPK to release at 10:55 a.m. on Monday and Tuesday
- Grades K-6 to dismiss at 11 a.m. on Monday and Tuesday
- Regents Exams will continue as planned in air-conditioned rooms at the high school
